Athens & Epidaurus Festival 2025 once again invites us to a cultural marathon that unfolds across four iconic venues: the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, and Peiraios 260. The program features ancient drama, music, dance, and contemporary artistic expressions.
🎟️ ANCIENT THEATRE OF EPIDAURUS: ANCIENT DRAMA UNDER THE MOONLIGHT
Built in the 4th century BCE by the architect Polykleitos the Younger, the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is considered one of the best-preserved and most acoustically perfect theatres of antiquity. It is located within the archaeological site of the Asklepieion of Epidaurus, one of the most important healing centers of the ancient world.
With a seating capacity of approximately 14,000, it is world-renowned for its exceptional acoustics—every whisper from the stage can be heard clearly even in the highest tiers. Watching an ancient drama here, surrounded by forest and starlight, is a magical and deeply moving experience—truly a journey through time.
This theatre is the main stage for ancient Greek tragedy and comedy during the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, which each summer features major productions by leading Greek and international directors and theatre companies, always with reverence for the site’s historical legacy.
🚌 Getting There:
- By car: Around 2 hours (140 km) from Athens via Corinth–Epidaurus. Organized parking is available near the site.
- By festival bus: The Festival offers free roundtrip bus transportation from central Athens (departure from Syntagma Square at 17:00–18:00, return after the show). Seat reservation available when booking tickets.
- Alternative options: Private tours and day trips that include a guided visit to the archaeological site and attendance at the performance.
💡 Tips for Visiting Epidaurus:
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes—expect stone steps and natural terrain.
- Bring a cushion or seat pad—the original stone seating is stunning but… hard!
- Arrive early (at least 45–60 minutes before) to enjoy the landscape and avoid queues.
- Evenings can get cool—bring a light jacket or wrap.
🌿 LITTLE THEATRE OF ANCIENT EPIDAURUS: MUSIC & CONTEMPORARY WORKS BY THE SEA
Lesser known but equally enchanting, the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus is perched on a hillside with a sea view near the picturesque port of Palaia Epidaurus. Built in the 4th century BCE and rediscovered only in recent decades, it has a small capacity (approx. 2,000), offering an intimate, atmospheric, and almost mystical performance setting.
Every summer, it hosts performances within the “Lyrical Word” cycle—an inspired blend of art music, poetry, and theatre. These are typically contemporary productions, often Greek, featuring poetic language, musicality, and innovative direction—perfectly suited to the intimacy of the space.
🚌 Getting There:
- Located in Palaia Epidaurus, approx. 2 hours from Athens.
- By car: Easy drive via Corinth – Agios Dimitrios – Palaia Epidaurus. Organized parking is available near the port.
- By festival bus: Free bus service from Athens for performances at the Little Theatre. Book early when purchasing tickets.
- The theatre is a short 5–10 minute walk from the port of Palaia Epidaurus.
💡 Tips for the Little Theatre:
- Arrive early and enjoy a seaside stroll lined with tavernas, fishing boats, and twinkling lights.
- Combine your visit with dinner or a swim—Palaia Epidaurus is one of the most charming coastal villages in Argolida.
- Don’t forget insect repellent! The natural setting calls for a spray or wristband.
🏛️ ODEON OF HERODES ATTICUS – BENEATH THE ACROPOLIS
Built in 161 CE at the foot of the Acropolis, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus (commonly known as the Herodeion) is one of the world’s most iconic ancient theatres and a cultural landmark of Athens. Its superb acoustics, dramatic Roman arch, and the illuminated Acropolis backdrop create a truly magical setting.
The 2025 season holds special significance—it will be the last full summer program at the Herodeion before a three-year renovation begins, keeping it closed until 2028. This makes this year’s performances especially meaningful—a final chance to enjoy the marble amphitheatre as we know it.
📍 How to Get There:
- Located in the heart of Athens, on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, at the entrance of the Acropolis archaeological site.
- By metro: Acropoli station (Line 2 – red), a 5-minute walk.
- On foot: A wonderful walk through the historic center leads directly to the venue.
- Important: Entry is only via the main Dionysiou Areopagitou entrance. Late arrivals are not permitted once the performance begins.
💡 Tips for the Herodeion:
- Arrive at least one hour early—the pedestrian route along Dionysiou Areopagitou is an experience in itself, especially at dusk.
- Bring a seat cushion and water—marble seating is beautiful but… unforgiving. Only small water bottles are allowed.
- Wear comfortable flat shoes (heels strictly prohibited), and pack a light jacket for cooler evenings.
- Book in advance: Performances sell out quickly, especially major concerts and opera productions.
- Tickets available exclusively via aefestival.gr and ticketservices.gr.
- Festival Friend Cards are available, offering discounts and privileges.
🏭 PEIRAIOS 260: THE INDUSTRIAL HUB OF CONTEMPORARY ART
Located in the Tavros area within a repurposed industrial complex, Peiraios 260 has become one of Athens’ most vibrant centers for contemporary artistic expression. Raw, bold, and atmospheric, this venue is the home of the Festival’s most experimental and cutting-edge productions.
With its large warehouses and open-air courtyards, it’s ideal for unconventional staging, multimedia installations, contemporary dance, avant-garde musical projects, and theatre collaborations from Greece and abroad.
